Goa Stampede: 6 Dead, Over 15 Injured at Lairai Devi Temple

Goa Stampede: Two heartbreaking incidents occurred in India recently during religious gatherings, leading to multiple deaths and injuries.

Goa Stampede:

The first tragedy took place at the Lairai Devi Temple in Shrigao, Goa, during a large religious event. A stampede occurred in the early hours of May 3, 2025. According to the police, six people lost their lives, and over 15 others were injured. The North Goa Superintendent of Police, Akshat Kaushal, confirmed the news and said investigations are ongoing. Thousands of devotees had gathered at the temple, and the crowd became unmanageable. The exact cause of the stampede is still unknown, but more details are expected soon.

The second incident happened on April 30, 2025, in Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. A 20-foot wall collapsed at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple during the Chandanotsavam festival, killing at least seven people and injuring many others. The collapse occurred at around 2:30 a.m., when heavy rain had loosened the soil near the structure. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were quickly sent to the site and cleared the debris.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow and promised full support to the victims’ families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu also shared their condolences and announced financial aid. The central government will give ₹2 lakh to the families of those who died and ₹50,000 to the injured.

Many locals said they had raised concerns earlier about the weak structure of the temple wall, but no action was taken. Opposition leaders criticized the government and demanded a full investigation.

These unfortunate events highlight the urgent need for better crowd management, stronger safety measures, and regular inspections of public spaces, especially during

festivals.
