Golden Temple During Operation Sindoor:
The Indian Army has officially denied reports that air defence (AD) guns were deployed inside the Golden Temple in Amritsar during Operation Sindoor. The clarification came a day after Lt Gen Sumer Ivan D’Cunha, in charge of the Army’s air defence, said guns had been placed near the temple to counter possible threats from Pakistan.
Some reports had claimed that the temple authorities had given permission to the Army to position air defence systems inside the temple to defend against drone or missile attacks. However, the Army released a statement saying, “No air defence guns or any such resources were deployed inside the premises of Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar.”
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the temple’s additional head granthi, Giani Amarjeet Singh, also denied these claims. They clarified that no permission was given to place military weapons inside the sacred site. Singh explained that during a blackout ordered by the Amritsar district administration, the temple authorities agreed to switch off the exterior and upper lights. However, lights at places where religious practices are held were kept on, as per tradition.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said the temple administration was informed about security measures, but they were not asked to allow weapons inside the premises. He confirmed that religious activities such as daily prayers, the Langar (community kitchen), and readings of holy scriptures continued without any disturbance.
This clarification from the Army and the temple management aims to stop the spread of misinformation and protect the dignity of the Golden Temple, one of the most sacred places for Sikhs around the world. The authorities have urged the public to rely on official statements and not believe in false
reports.
