Government to Impose Tax on Garbage: Where, and From When?

Tax on Garbage: The Congress government has taken a sensational decision. It has been announced that a tax will be imposed on garbage from April 1, 2025. The decision to impose this garbage cess in the name of user charges for collecting waste from houses in the capital city of Karnataka, Bengaluru, is being implemented. So, let’s analyze and find out how much garbage tax will be collected from each house per year.

Why, Tax on garbage?

The Siddaramaiah-led Congress party government in Karnataka is struggling to implement the 6 guarantees given during the assembly elections. People say that, since there is no money in the state treasury to implement the promises, it is imposing taxes on the people to collect funds. RTC has already increased bus fares, metro fares, vehicle registration prices, milk and curd prices, electricity fares, water fares, stamp duty, excise duty, outpatient fees, post-mortem examination charges, and medical certificate fees.

Where, and From When?: In detail

The Siddaramaiah government, which has already burdened the people of Karnataka with all these fare increases, has recently imposed a new garbage cess on garbage collection. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike – BBMP, has decided to collect this garbage cess for waste management in Bengaluru city. BBMP has announced that it will collect user charges for waste collection from April 1. The user charges have been decided based on the area of the building. For residential buildings with an area of less than 600 square feet, a user charge of Rs. 10 per month (Rs. 120 per year) will be collected from each household.

Similarly, a user charge of Rs. 400 per month (4,800 per year) will be collected from each house for buildings with an area of 4,000 square feet and above. On the other hand, Rs. 12 per kg will be collected from commercial buildings. The Karnataka government is collecting this garbage tax in the name of Solid Waste Management-SWM fee. BBMP officials revealed that this tax has been implemented to collect and dispose of garbage in Bengaluru city in a better way. They said that the BBMP will earn Rs. 685 crore from this garbage tax.
