Gukesh: The tournament score now stands at 1-1 after World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh upset former World Champion Magnus Carlsen in the sixth round of the Norway Chess 2025. Gukesh defeated Carlsen for the first time in a classical match by exploiting his opponent’s error in the game, where he went behind.
At one point, it appeared like Carlsen would win with the black pieces, but Gukesh persisted in fighting, and Carlsen’s advantage gradually vanished. Then, with both of them pressed for time, Carlsen made a catastrophic mistake that cost him the game. With this victory, Gukesh shot up to third place with 8.5 points, one point behind American and world No. 1 Fabiano Caruana.

After losing to Carlsen with the black pieces in the first round of Norway Chess, Gukesh pulled off this comeback victory. In the past, Carlsen has criticized Gukesh’s classical play and his poise when working under gradual time constraints. Carlsen wrote a mysterious message on social media following his victory over Gukesh in the first round: “You come at the king, you best not miss.”
Carlsen won the World Championship for the fifth time earlier in 2024, but he decided not to defend it. His match against Gukesh at Norway Chess was his first classical appearance since the Indian prodigy became the youngest world champion in history last year. He had taken a break from classical chess for a spell.
