Delhi Weather Alert:
On Sunday, June 1, Delhi witnessed a sudden change in weather as dust storms, heavy winds, and rain swept through the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that wind speeds reached up to 80 kmph, causing a sharp drop in visibility across several areas, including Safdarjung. This turbulent weather affected both local life and air travel.
The IMD has issued a multi-hazard weather warning for Delhi and nearby regions like Haryana, Noida, Gurgaon, and Faridabad. They warned of thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds, urging people to stay safe and alert. According to their forecast, parts of North India including Rajasthan, Chandigarh, and Delhi may face continued gusty winds, rain, and lightning over the next few hours.
This weather disruption has impacted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi. Due to low visibility and strong winds, several flights were delayed or diverted. Airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued travel advisories, asking passengers to keep checking their flight status online before heading to the airport.
The IMD also released warnings for other regions. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Kerala, Karnataka and parts of the Northeast, including Mizoram and Manipur, may also receive moderate to heavy showers.
Earlier, the IMD had forecast that Delhi-NCR would face a dust storm followed by rain, with winds ranging between 40 and 70 kmph. The storm and rainfall will continue into early June. People in affected areas should stay indoors during strong winds, avoid taking shelter under trees, and check official updates regularly. Stay safe and stay informed during this period. The IMD’s alerts are part of efforts to keep citizens informed and reduce possible damage from unexpected weather shifts.
