Hands Off Protests: What Sparked Nationwide Anti-Trump Marches

Hands Off Protests: Thousands of Americans came out on April 5, 2025, to protest against President Donald Trump and his advisor Elon Musk. The protest known as the “Hands Off!” movement, was one of the biggest demonstrations since Trump returned to office. Over 1,200 events took place in all 50 states, with people raising their voices to defend democracy, Social Security and civil rights.

Why are people protesting?

The protesters believe that the new administration is making harmful changes. Many fear that government programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid could face changes. Some feel angry about the government dismissing federal workers, cutting education funding, restricting reproductive rights, and cracking down on immigration. People also worry about losing protection for LGBTQ+ individuals and seeing Social Security offices close.

Protesters in different cities held signs with messages like “Hands off our democracy” and “Hands off our Social Security.”One protester from Florida, Archer Moran, said, “The list of things they should leave alone is very long. It’s shocking how quickly these protests had to begin after Trump took office again.”

Cities involved in the protest

The protests took place in major cities including Washington D.C., New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, demonstrators marched from City Hall to Independence Mall. In Los Angeles, one woman wore a costume from The Handmaid’s Tale and waved a flag that read, “Get out of my uterus,” referring to Trump’s strict abortion policies.

Who organized the protests?

Over 150 different organizations helped arrange the protests. These included civil rights groups, labor unions, LGBTQ+ advocates, veterans’ organizations, and voting rights activists. The demonstrations remained peaceful and no major incidents were reported.

Hands Off Protests:

As of now, President Trump has not personally responded to the protests. However, a statement from the White House said that Trump would always protect Social Security and Medicare for eligible Americans. The statement criticized Democrats, claiming they want to give benefits to illegal immigrants, which could “bankrupt these programs.”

Senator Bernie Sanders supported the protesters, saying that Americans will not allow billionaires to get richer while important public programs get cut. He added, “We will stand up to authoritarianism and fight f

or a fair society.”
