In a surprise turn of events, a student from India was arrested for allegedly selling sensitive information to Pakistan Army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan. The action has resulted in a grave security breach and cross-border espionage scandal.
Indian security forces had been monitoring suspicious activities of espionage and leaking of sensitive information. From interrogation, the authorities learned that the suspected student was in contact with ISI agents via encrypted communication means, relaying sensitive information compromising national security.
The arrested man is said to be a young student from Haryana, who would have harboured dreams of joining the defence studies and technology line. ISI operatives, sources say, chatted with him on social networking sites, promising him a job and money in the future. He became heavily embedded with the spy network in time, sharing sensitive details about Indian military strategies and operations, sources say.
The police claimed that the student employed several clandestine modes of communication. That include end-to-end encrypted messaging applications, pseudonym social media handles, and digital wallets that facilitate payments. Facts presented were said to include troop deployments, security deployment, and defense installations sensitive information that would have imperiled India’s security.
The suspect has been arrested under dual provisions of the Official Secrets Act and other strict espionage legislation. The government is also investigating whether he acted alone or as part of an organized group with ISI handlers. The arrest is a reflection of new dangers from cyber-based espionage and the necessity to stay guarded against security threats.
