The US Embassy in India recently issued an advisory to Indian students studying in the United States, informing them of the risks of visa revocation. US Embassy warns Indian students to cancel Visa who drop out of school, miss school, or leave their program without informing their school will lose their student visa as well as future US visa eligibility.
The embassy notice warned students to be vigilant about visa conditions, maintain full-time enrollment, and stay in touch with their Designated School Officials (DSO) to avoid problems. The warning is in line with the conditions of the F-1 visa, which requires international students to enroll fully and appear regularly in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
Tensions Between India and the US
This is in the wake of heightened tensions between India and the US, particularly on student visa regulations and immigration policies. The Trump administration has been tightening visa regulations, and deportations of immigrants and foreign students have been on a huge scale. It is only since January 2025 that nearly 700 Indians have been deported from the US, and the majority of them have had their visas revoked for non-compliance.
Indian students form a dominant proportion of foreign enrollments in American universities. In the year 2023 alone, more than 140,000 student visas were issued by the US Indian consular team, a record high, for the third consecutive year. Toughest rules now, however, make it difficult for students who pursue their higher studies in America. Exceeding visa terms can lead to deportation, legal proceedings, and prohibition on future travel.
