Himachal Flash Floods: Six Dead, 250 Rescued as Search Ops Intensify

Flash Floods Strike Kangra, Kullu


Monsoon-triggered flash floods hit Dharamshala, Kangra, and the Sainj valley in Kullu on June 26 -27, 2025. Torrential rains and cloudbursts overwhelmed rivers and nullahs. Authorities launched large‑scale rescue efforts. The current death toll stands at six, including four identified victims. Eight people remain missing three in Kangra and five in Kullu. Search and rescue teams continue their operations.

Rescue Teams in Action

The SDRF, local police, and Home Guard initiated rapid rescue actions in Kangra. They saved around 250 people and recovered two bodies on day one. On day two, the NDRF joined, and three more bodies were found. Officials retrieved one survivor from a forest near Dharamshala.

Ongoing Search in Kullu flash floods

In Kullu’s Sainj valley, three individuals among them a 14‑year‑old girl who went missing after floods at Jeeva nullah. Teams have not located them yet. Kullu also experienced four cloudbursts and nine flash floods, which blocked roads and hit hydel projects.

CM Declares Alert

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed all Deputy Commissioners to remain alert 24/7. He held a virtual review from Shimla and demanded swift relief, rehabilitation, and damage assessments. He urged authorities to relocate migrant workers and families near rivers to safer zones.

Safety Advisory Issued 

The state government issued strict warnings for locals and tourists to avoid rivers and nullahs during the monsoon. They also closed hydroelectric project gates in Kullu after a cloudburst in Sainj. Two national highways remain blocked due to landslides.

Stay Vigilant

Rescue teams remain active. Meteorologists have issued a yellow alert for heavy rain on June 27-28. Communities should stay vigilant and follow official guidance.

Himachal faces a grave monsoon test. With six dead, eight missing, and hundreds displaced, authorities must reinforce early warning systems, evacuations, and disaster resilience.
