How Did an 8-Year-Old Girl Vomit live Worms for Weeks?

Girl Vomit live Worms: After a month of an eight-year-old child in China vomiting live worms, physicians finally identified the surprising cause: a common home insect. Given how widespread these insects are in South Asia, the girl’s odd case has gone viral on social media. The youngster and her father were unable to determine why she was consistently spitting up handfuls of 1cm-long worms for weeks, even after multiple doctor consultations. The strange ailment did not affect any other family members, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Live Worms in Stomach:

A physician at Jiangsu’s Children’s Hospital of Soochow University made a breakthrough by urging the local Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the rarely seen worm. CDC personnel immediately identified the culprits as drain fly larvae, also known as moth flies, which they had previously observed in a 60-year-old woman. These insects commonly thrive in the humid climate of southern China and typically breed in damp indoor areas like kitchens and bathrooms. After the identification, the girl’s family recalled seeing these insects in their home.

Yangzhou CDC department chief Xu Yuhui explained the likely source of the contamination. He said drain fly larvae had infiltrated the subterranean water supply. “When the child brushes her teeth or flushes the toilet, splashes of water may carry the worms into her system,” Xu told the newspaper. Although these flies don’t spread infections through the blood, Xu warned that they can still cause health issues. He noted that the insects carry bacteria, which can enter the body through contact, such as when someone scratches their eyes. Xu advised people not to kill the flies by hand. Instead, he recommended pouring boiling water mixed with baking soda and salt to eliminate them. He also emphasized that keeping kitchens and bathrooms consistently dry and clean remains the best way to prevent infestations.
