Hyderabad Old City Metro: The much-awaited Hyderabad Old City metro rail project is going in full swing, with property demolitions gaining momentum. The project is a much-needed step towards the development of connectivity in the area, most significantly on the 7.5-kilometer stretch between Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) and Chandrayangutta.
The demolition work, which was halted for a while during the sacred month of Ramzan out of respect for local sentiments. It has now been resumed in good earnest. A number of buildings in localities such as Mir Alam Mandi, and Etebar Chowk are being demolished to give way to the metro rail corridor. The authorities say that around 80 buildings have been earmarked for demolition, 39 of which have already been vacated, and the rest are in different stages of advancement.
Land acquisition exercise is an integral part of the metro railway construction. The exercise has identified some 1,100 properties that need to be acquired and sent notices to nearly 980 such properties. Land and property along this route would cost around ₹1,000 crore to be acquired and represents a large portion of the ₹2,714 crore in that the project would be investing at the first stage. Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML), the state government’s special purpose vehicle, will implement the project. Greater Connectivity and Future Plans

The extension of the metro rail is set to connect the Old City with the rest of Hyderabad, Fulfilling long-time calls for more public transport for the area. The project comes as part of the entire Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II plan. With new lines to Raidurg, Nagole, and Patancheru. The section of the Old City will also be connected to the international airport at Shamshabad, providing additional connectivity for the area.
The continuous demolitions and land purchases are indications of humongous development in the Old City metro rail project. Although the process is not flawless, such as displacement and compensation. The project can also bring revolution in the public transport system of the region. With the construction in progress, the Old City will be witnessing a new era of connectivity and development.
