IAS Officer Smita Sabharwal: The investigation into the Kanch Gachibowli land issue is ongoing. Police are closely examining several social media accounts that shared an AI generated image related to the case. One of those who reposted the image was senior IAS officer Smita Sabharwal. In response, the Gachibowli police have issued her a notice seeking clarification on her post.
The Kanch Gachibowli land lies next to the Hyderabad Central University campus. The Supreme Court had already ordered a stay on any development work there. Despite the stay, photos showing construction equipment and wild animals like deer and peacocks surfaced online. This sparked public outrage and drew the attention of the police and government.
AI Photo and Police Action
An AI generated image related to the disputed land went viral on social media. The Telangana government has taken the matter seriously. As part of the investigation, police are identifying those who created and shared the image. They have already flagged several accounts. Among them is Smita Sabharwal’s social media post dated March 31. She shared the image with two deer, a peacock and earth-moving machines.
Notice to Smita Sabharwal
On April 12, police issued a notice to Smita Sabharwal under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The notice asks for an explanation but does not accuse her of any wrongdoing. Smita Sabharwal currently serves as the Principal Secretary of the Telangana Department of Tourism and Culture.
Background of the Controversy
The Telangana government had planned to auction the land and handed it over to TSIIC. Bulldozers and JCB machines were brought in and trees were removed. Students and activists protested against the government’s action. They ran large scale campaigns to protect the environment and green cover. The issue reached the High Court and then the Supreme Court. The legal case is still under trial.
