IMD Red Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared a red alert for Goa. And an orange alert for Mumbai with heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and squally winds. The May 23 to May 27 warnings are meant to ready people for severe weather disturbances, particularly in flood-hit areas.
The red alert indicates the highest level of warning, forecasting extremely heavy downpours. That could lead to widespread flooding, waterlogging, and possible landslides. Coastal regions, including Raigad and Ratnagiri, are expected to experience similar weather patterns, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Mumbai and suburbs such as Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and Pune city are on orange alert. Which means heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms and a gusty wind of 50-60 kmph. The IMD has put out a notice that low-lying places can see a serious waterlogging situation that will lead to traffic congestion and travel disruption.
The current weather disturbance has been induced by a low-pressure system developing over the east-central Arabian Sea, causing heavy pre-monsoon showers along the Konkan coast and Maharashtra. Meteorologists believe that the system has the potential to intensify, causing incessant heavy showers over the area.
Government officials have suggested that citizens adopt the following precautions:
The fishermen should not venture into the sea, as the weather is adverse.
The people are advised to stay indoors and not move out into the waterlogged areas.
The emergency personnel are at a state of high alertness for quick rescue operations, if needed.
