India-Nepal Conducts Military Drill together. They have started a two-week mutual military exercise after intelligence reports of Pakistan-based terrorists in the Himalayas. The exercise aimed to enhance counter-terrorism operations. Security along the border, and greater interoperability between the two countries’ militaries.
The military exercise, Exercise Surya Kiran, annually organized by the Indian Army and Nepal Army. The current edition is based on jungle warfare, counter-terror operations, and rescue in the event of a disaster. The exercise happened in Saljhandi, Nepal, and will be for two weeks.
Pakistan-Based Terror Threat in the Himalayas
Recent reports indicate that terror groups operating from Pakistan are likely to try to infiltrate Nepal with an eye on creating sleeper cells and upsetting regional peace. Security agencies have been raising concerns about cross-border penetration and posing a threat to India’s northern borders.
“During joint patrolling, soldiers from Nepal are with us in the fight against terrorism. We have very good relations with the Nepali forces. Every month, coordination meetings of the border forces of both countries are held. They are sharing their intelligence with us and we are sharing ours with them so that the suspects can be identified,” SSB Commandant Ganga Singh stated.
Aims of the Military Exercise
The main aim of the exercise :
Enhance counter-terror capabilities in mountainous regions.
Enhance the sharing of intelligence between India and Nepal.
Securing borders against infiltration.
Training soldiers in relief during calamities and humanitarian relief.
India’s Security Measures Beyond
India has been preparing its military to be strong in response to increased tensions with Pakistan. The Indian Air Force also carried out large-scale air exercises recently at the border with Pakistan. while government has conducted nationwide civilian defense exercises to prepare civilians for warlike conditions.
The India-Nepal combined military exercise is a way of showcasing the increased security cooperation between the two nations during the tough times. As terror threats from Pakistan-base intel has come from trusted sources. The two countries are eager to solidify defense arrangements and attain regional stability.
