India-Pakistan tensions: Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply increased after a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. The attack killed 26 people, many of them tourists. Since then, both countries have taken strong political and military actions.
After the attack, India decided to reduce its diplomatic ties with Pakistan. This decision was taken during a high-level security meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India also announced the closure of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari, Punjab, and suspended the Indus Waters Treaty—a key water-sharing agreement with Pakistan.
In return, Pakistan announced that it would stop all trade with India and might even cancel the 1971 Simla Agreement, which was signed to maintain peace between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation after the attack. He firmly stated that India will track down every terrorist and punish those responsible. Speaking from Bihar, he said that the country will not forgive those involved in such violent acts and will take strict action.
The attack happened when PM Modi was on a visit to Saudi Arabia and U.S. Vice President JD Vance was in India. Modi ended his trip early and returned to Delhi to handle the situation.
As both countries remain on high alert, international observers are worried. The fear of war and the involvement of nuclear weapons have made the global community concerned about the future of peace in the region.
