Indian Government Takes 5 Crucial Steps: On April 22, 2025, a horrific terror attack shook the peaceful Baisaran Valley around and in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorists who were gun-toting attacked tourists enjoying the scenic grassland, and 28 were left dead and more than a dozen injured. The black Resistance Front (TRF), which is operating with a link to Lashkar-e-Taiba, took responsibility for the attack. One of the most lethal attacks since the Pulwama attack in 2019, the attack was on victims on the basis of their religion, and the whole nation reacted with anger and condemnation.
Following the attack, India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, essentially shelving the 64-year-old accord. This radical step is a sign of India’s intent to make a strong statement against cross-border terror and ensure its sovereignty.
The government directed Attari Integrated Check Post, a big trade and transportation hub linking India and Pakistan, to be closed. The move is to curb bilateral contacts and advance security initiatives with escalating tensions.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri enforced stringent initiatives on Pakistani nationals. The new guidelines read:
– Pakistani citizens will no longer be eligible to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES).
– All existing SVES visas issued to Pakistani citizens will be revoked.
– Already in India on SVES visas, they will be directed to depart within 48 hours.
India has declared defence, naval and air advisors serving at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi persona non grata, and has asked them to depart in a week. India is also pulling its defence, naval and air advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Five support staff serving with these posts will also be pulled out from both High Commissions.
The government has made up its mind to downsize the personnel of high commission of both nations from 55 to 30 with effect from May 1. The move indicates a policy change from cuts in diplomatic relations and towards national security.
