Different limits have been set for carrying luggage for different categories of passengers in Indian Railways. Passengers traveling in AC First Class can carry up to 70 kg of luggage, while for AC 2-tier sleeper and first-class passengers, this limit has been fixed at 50 kg. Similarly, this limit is 40 kg for AC 3-tier sleeper, AC chair car, and sleeper class passengers. Second-class passengers can carry up to 35 kg of luggage. This rule of the railways ensures that passengers do not bring more luggage. And it does not cause any inconvenience to other passengers.


Extra Luggage? Pay the Fee or Travel Light! If passengers travel with more luggage than their fixed limit. Then they will have to pay a fee for it. According to Indian Railways, if your luggage is slightly more than the free limit. Then you will have to pay the normal luggage fee as per the fixed fee rate. But if it exceeds the prescribed limit, then you may have to pay 1.5 times the extra fee. In such a situation, it would be better if you booked the extra luggage in the railway baggage office before starting your journey so that you do not have to face any kind of problem during the journey.

Items Excluded from Free Luggage Allowance Revealed

According to the rules of Indian Railways, some items do not come under the free luggage allowance. These include scooters, bicycles, etc., which are required to be booked separately. Apart from this, the railway does not allow carrying some dangerous and restricted items such as flammable substances, gas cylinders, explosive materials, acids, and other corrosive (rusting) substances. At the same time, children between the ages of 5 and 12 years get half of the free luggage allowance as per their ticket category. But the maximum limit has been fixed at 50 kg. By following this rule, your journey will be smooth and hassle-free.
