Indian Student in the US Loses $5000 to Fake ICE Agents

Indian Student ICE Scam:

A shocking incident took place in the United States recently, where an Indian student fell victim to a phone scam and lost $5,000. The student, Shriya Bedi, is currently studying for her master’s degree at Indiana University Bloomington. She had gone to the U.S. in 2022 on an F-1 visa.

Indian Student ICE Scam:

On May 29, she received a phone call from someone claiming to be an official from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The caller accused her of violating immigration laws and frightened her by saying an arrest warrant was issued in her name. He even gave her a fake name and asked her to verify it on the ICE website to make it look real.

Later, another person called claiming to be from the Olympia Police Department. He told her not to hang up the phone and warned that her situation could get worse if she did. She was scared and spoke to them for nearly three hours.

They seemed to know personal information about her—like which city she was from in India and how she came to the U.S.—which made her believe they were real government officers. The scammers then forced her to buy Apple and Target gift cards worth $5,000 and share the codes with them. They promised a police officer would collect the cards the next day, but no one showed up.

Shriya said she felt helpless and terrified. She had saved that money to support herself as she lives alone in the U.S. with no family support. Shriya shared her story to warn other students not to fall into such scams.

She also reminded everyone that international students have rights and should never hesitate to contact real lawyers or the police if they face such threats.

This incident shows how scammers use fear and false authority to cheat innocent students living abroad.
