India’s Risk Of Myanmar-Scale Earthquake? IIT Scientist Revealed

The earthquake has caused huge devastation in Myanmar and Bangkok. The main reason for this earthquake is the Sagaing Fault. Professor Javed Malik of the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Kanpur, said that the Sagaing Fault is very dangerous. There is a Ganga-Bengal fault in Siliguri. There are many other fault lines between these two faults. In such a situation, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the activation of one fault may activate the other fault. This also poses a threat to India. India’s Risk Of Myanmar-Scale Earthquake? This is the most trending question.

According to a media report, Professor Javed Malik said that Sagaing is a very old fault. He said that the shear zone of the northeast is a part of the subduction zone from Arakan to Andaman and Sumatra. Sagging fault is visible above the ground. Experts from Japan and Europe have worked on Sagaing. Studies show that the frequency of earthquakes here is 150-200 years; that is, a powerful earthquake occurs once in so many years.

More research is needed on Zone-5.

Prof. Malik said that we should not wait for a big earthquake. There are many active fault lines in the Himalayas. Everyone has worked on the frontal parts, but there are fault lines above as well. We should not see earthquakes only around the plate boundary. He said that North-East and Kashmir are in Zone-5. More research is needed in this area. We should be more careful in this area. Work should be done to reduce the impact of earthquakes.

The Ganga-Bengal fault:

The Ganga-Bengal fault is very important because it has movement like the Sagaing fault. The Dawki, Kopli, and Dibruchautang fault zones are also in between the Ganga-Bengal and Sagaing faults. The Ganga-Bengal fault is also visible on the surface. Sagaing fault is an active fault due to which earthquakes have occurred in Myanmar. This can be a signal for India. Prof. Malik said that it cannot be said that nothing is happening between Sagaing and Gangetic-Bengal. The entire region is under pressure, and energy is constantly accumulating there.

It cannot be denied that one earthquake cannot activate another earthquake. This is called ‘trigger stress.’ Here it is important to see whether such activities have increased from north to south. Prof. Malik said that in the year 2004, an earthquake occurred in Sumatra, Andaman. In the year 2005, an earthquake occurred in the south of this region. Now earthquakes have started coming upwards. The possibility of triggering always remains.
