India unemployment rate April 2025:
For the first time, India’s government has released monthly data on unemployment to provide a real-time look at the job market. According to the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, the unemployment rate in April 2025 was 5.1%.
This data comes from the new monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which aims to track how many people eligible for work are actually unemployed. Earlier, this survey was only released quarterly or annually, so this monthly update gives a clearer picture of the current situation.
Among all age groups, men had a slightly higher unemployment rate at 5.2%, while women’s unemployment was 5%. The highest joblessness was seen in young people aged 15 to 29 years, with 13.8% of them unemployed across the country.
Urban areas showed a higher unemployment rate of 17.2%, compared to 12.3% in rural regions. Young women in cities faced the highest joblessness, with nearly 24% unemployed, while young men in cities had about 15% unemployment.
The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), which measures the percentage of people working or actively looking for work, was 55.6% overall. It was higher in rural areas (58%) than in urban areas (50.7%). Among men, the participation rate was much higher, around 79% in rural and 75% in urban areas. For women, the rates were much lower—38.2% in rural areas and even less in cities.
The Worker Population Ratio (WPR), showing the share of employed people in the population, stood at 52.8% nationally. It was 55.4% in rural areas and 47.4% in urban areas. Women’s WPR was much lower than men’s, especially in cities.
This new monthly data will help the government and policymakers better understand and address India’s employment challenges.
