India’s Widest Tunnel: Dwaraka Expressway to Delhi Airport

India’s Widest Tunnel: Numerous initiatives have been put out to improve connectivity in the Delhi and NCR area. The Dwarka Expressway Project, which will connect Delhi and Gurugram, is one such undertaking. Two tunnels are part of this project. Commuters’ traffic-related problems will be lessened once these tunnels are accessible to the general public.

Trial runs on the Dwarka Expressway tunnel have started. The fact that this tunnel connects Gurugram to the Delhi Airport immediately is a relief for Delhi-NCR travelers. This tunnel is strategically located between Delhi and Gurugram, according to officials. In addition, a number of underpasses constructed along this route would provide direct travel from Gurugram to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the tunnel’s unique location and design would benefit everyday commuters, relieving pressure on surface roads and reducing traffic bottlenecks because it connects to IGI Airport via the Dwarka Expressway.

Trail Run Open to the Public:

Officials opened a small tunnel for trial runs that connects Delhi’s Dwarka to Indira Gandhi International Airport via the airport underpass and provides a return route. The setup also includes a small tunnel and a right-turn underpass linking Dwarka to Gurugram, specifically toward Sirhaul.

According to the official announcement, commuters can use both the right-turn underpass and the airport underpass together to travel from Terminal 3 to Gurugram (Sirhaul direction).

The Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway will ease traffic between key areas such as Gurugram, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, and Alipur, while also improving airport access. This tunnel will further connect to several major highways across the Delhi-NCR region.

Tunnel Length & Connectivity:

The 5.1 km tunnel connects directly to the Dwarka Expressway. Engineers have constructed the tunnel in two sections, one measuring 3.6 km and the other 1.5 km. Currently, authorities are conducting trial runs on a 2.5 km stretch of the tunnel on the Delhi side of the expressway, scheduled daily from 12 noon to 3 pm.

Construction teams have completed the Delhi segment of the Dwarka Expressway, including the tunnel, while officials opened the Gurugram portion last year. The Rs 9,000 crore Dwarka Expressway project includes a 4 km tunnel linking Shiv Murti to IGI Airport, 18.9 km of roadway in Gurugram, and 10.1 km in Delhi. The project also features 23 km of elevated roads.
