Inside Tahawwur Rana’s 14×14 Cell Life: Complete Details

A modest, highly secured room at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters in Delhi is currently hosting one of India’s most high-profile terrorism investigations in recent years. Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being kept in a 14-foot-by-14-foot cell with round-the-clock guards and CCTV surveillance. He was extradited from the United States on Thursday.

Cell Details:
This cell lies on the ground floor of the NIA building at the CGO Complex, which has been converted into a fortification since Rana’s arrival. Additional Delhi Police and paramilitary men have been stationed outside. No one is permitted to enter without approval, including media workers, who were removed from Patiala House court grounds Thursday night before Rana’s arrival for security concerns.

Rana’s cell is equipped with multiple-layered digital security measures. CCTV cameras watch every inch, and only 12 NIA personnel are permitted to enter. He is under 24/7 surveillance with tight security inside and out of the building. There is a bed on the ground and a bathroom within the cell to keep his movements restricted. All of his basic needs, including food, water, and medical supplies, will be met within.

Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian of Pakistani ancestry, arrived in Delhi on Thursday aboard an extradition flight from the United States. Hours later, he was brought before a special NIA court in Patiala House. The courtroom was evacuated of all non-essential staff. Judge Chander Jit Singh, presiding over the special NIA bench, allowed the agency 18 days of custody, which was little less than the desired 20.

Legal Aid from the Indian Government:

The judge advised Rana, who appeared without legal representation, that he will be supplied with legal help through the Delhi Legal Services Authority. Advocate Piyush Sachdeva was then assigned to represent him.

Rana will be exposed to extensive questioning. His interrogation will be carried out under dual camera monitoring. Breaks will be provided, but otherwise, his schedule will be rigid and his reactions recorded. According to sources, eight central investigative and intelligence organizations have demanded access to Rana for questioning.
