Iraq closes airspace: Delhi Airport Issues Advisory as Air India Flights Get Disrupted

Iraq closes airspace: In the wake of escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iraq shut down its airspace following news of Israeli attacks on Iranian military targets. The scenario has prompted flight disruptions on several international flights, including those flying from India. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi Airport) issued an advisory to passengers flying to the affected areas.

Iraq Shuts Airspace Due to Security Concerns

Iraq state media news reports that its airspace was shut as a precautionary measure with the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel. Its airspace has been shut forthwith and for the safety of civilian aircraft in case of military confrontation.

The airspace closure is likely to continue until further security analysis is complete.

Impact on Flights and Travelling Passengers

The immediate impact of Iraq’s airspace closure is already being felt globally, as a number of airlines have had to divert or cancel flights. India’s national carrier Air India has assured that many of its long-distance flights to Europe and the UK are being diverted and delayed as a result.

This also includes flights that are usually flying over the Middle East air corridors, which are being reconfigured, resulting in increased flight times and rescheduling.

Delhi airport issues traveller advisory

In light of the issue, Delhi Airport has released a travel advisory formally advising travellers travelling to Europe, the UK and the Middle East to check the status of their flight prior to arriving at the airport.

It also requests that passengers:

Arrive at the airport early

Stay in touch with the airline to monitor for continuous developments

Be flexible and patient in case of further delays or re-routing

Airlines will monitor the situation

Air India and other airlines were closely following the situation and continuously communicated with the appropriate worldwide aviation authorities. They have advised customers their safety is everyone’s top priority and they are taking every appropriate measure to limit inconvenience as much as possible.
