IRCTC Brings E-Pantry for Food Booking: Find Out How

IRCTC E-Pantry: In a significant move to improve passenger convenience, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a Mini-Ratna PSU of Indian Railways, launched a new service called “E-Pantry” for Mail and Express trains. Previously, IRCTC offered this service only on premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. Now, by expanding its reach, the corporation aims to benefit a wider group of rail passengers, particularly those who have long complained about overpriced and low-quality meals.

To mark the launch, IRCTC introduced the E-Pantry service on the Vivek Express (22503/04), India’s longest-running train. Over the next 60 days, the corporation plans to extend the service to 25 more trains. Furthermore, IRCTC intends to expand the program even further, depending on its performance and passenger response.

What Is the ‘E-Pantry’ Service?:

Through the e-pantry, a digital meal booking system, travelers can place online food orders before, during, or after purchasing their tickets. Only trains with pantry cars will be able to use it. Passengers having confirmed, RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), or Partially Confirmed tickets can use the service.

How it Works:
By choosing the e-pantry option from their Booked Ticket History, passengers may easily make meal reservations online via the IRCTC website or mobile app. IRCTC provides a Meal Verification Code (MVC) by email or SMS after the reservation is confirmed. To provide a hassle-free onboard dining experience, guests only need to display this MVC on the day of the trip in order to have their meal delivered straight to their seats.

Key Features of IRCTC E-Pantry:

IRCTC’s e-pantry service offers several advantages that enhance passenger convenience and build trust. Travelers make cashless purchases using digital payment methods, which ensure ease and transparency. The system sets fixed, predetermined prices for food items, eliminating any chance of overcharging. IRCTC only allows licensed and approved vendors to deliver meals, which ensures both reliability and hygiene.

To maintain delivery accuracy, the system uses a Meal Verification Code (MVC) that confirms the food reaches the correct passenger. If vendors fail to deliver the food, IRCTC automatically processes a refund and sends updates via WhatsApp, email, or SMS. The organization also tracks every order digitally to ensure quality assurance and tax compliance, making the entire process secure and efficient. This service especially benefits passengers who may hesitate to trust unlicensed food vendors or those who struggle to find hygienic meal options during long journeys. Moreover, it supports Indian Railways’ broader mission to modernize its services and accelerate digital transformation.
