IRCTC Bullet Train Travel: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recently provided a unique travel experience to almost 30 tourists from Bangalore, Pune, and Mumbai. The unique tour provided the travellers with the experience of riding Japan’s world-renowned bullet trains, the Shinkansen, and witnessing the country’s breathtaking cherry blossom landscapes. The tour is one of the means through which Indian Railways is attempting to market its ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.
The 11-day April 6, 2025, tour involved two bullet train rides: one from Hiroshima to Osaka and a ride from Hiroshima to Tokyo. These rides by bullet trains on high-speed routes demonstrated moments of Shinkansen trainsets’ capability of being convenient and efficient, traveling over 800 kilometers on the route from Hiroshima to Tokyo. The cost of bullet trains of about ₹20,000 was within package fees, which made it such a luxury to indulge in for Indians among tourists.
Apart from the bullet train rides, the tour featured visits to Japanese attractions. Members had the experience of viewing Mount Fuji, boat ride on Lake Ashi, and visit to SC Maglev Railway Park. The Hiroshima Bomb Museum offered somber background information, while the cherry blossom tour offered a glimpse of nature’s beauty. Such a mix of activities created an experience that members would never forget.
This trip is IRCTC’s maiden significant foreign trip as it had become the ‘Navratna’ in March 2025. Which provided it with economic freedom and room to expand overseas. A top railway official noted that such tours were aimed at showcasing Indian travelers to the benefits of high-speed travel. Creating buzz for the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, which is still under construction.
With the success of this tour, IRCTC has now announced two more such packages. One in October 2025 and one in March 2026. The tours would once again offer a taste of high-speed train travel to Indian tourists as they experience the cultural and natural heritage of Japan.
