IRCTC Launches Bullet Train Projects. India’s first-ever bullet train project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR), is moving at a fast pace, with one of its major milestones in 2028. The Sabarmati to Vapi section of Gujarat will be operational by then and the entire corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be operational by 2030.
The 508 km high-speed rail corridor will cut travel time. Time to travel from Ahmedabad to Mumbai from around 7 hours to just 3 hours. The train will run at speeds of up to 320 km/h and stop at 12 stations in between. Including major cities such as Surat, Vadodara, and Thane.
Phased Rollout and Construction Progress
Development in Gujarat is also moving in a favorable trend, where more than half the civil construction has been completed. The NHSRCL has aimed for Gujarat as its initial operational phase beginning from Sabarmati and Vapi. The first operational part will be planned to get completed by 2028.
Maharashtra’s share, including complex infrastructure of a 21-kilometer tunnel with a 7-kilometer under-sea link near Mumbai, will be completed by 2030. Among the engineering feats of the project, it has undergone the 21-kilometer long Bandra Kurla Complex-Shilphata tunnel.
Contemporary Infrastructure and Design
Most of the highway will be elevated, with construction delivered via the most advanced Full Span Launching Techniques (FSLM), to expedite and complete the job faster. Principal features also involve more than two score river and steel bridges, needed for easy high-speed travel.

Capacity for Passengers and Future Developments
They will run initially with 10 coaches with a capacity of around 750 passengers. They will increase to 16 coaches when demand is more, and this doubles the capacity to over 1,200 passengers. The trains would be run from a control center at Sabarmati.
With robust impetus in Gujarat and land acquisition done for both states. India’s first bullet train project is all set to revolutionize the dynamics of intercity travel.
