Kaaba’s New Kiswah Ready for Installation: Stunning Gold-Threaded Cloth Unveiled

New Kiswah Ready for Installation

The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque will replace the Kaaba’s Kiswah at dawn on June 27. The date marks the first day of Muharram, the start of the Islamic year 1447 AH. The Kiswah is the black cloth that covers the Kaaba, a symbol of great spiritual significance.

Removal of Old Kiswah

Officials began removing the old will take place on June 26 after Asr prayer. They carefully took down lanterns, chandeliers, and fixed ornaments. They also lowered the curtain covering the Kaaba’s door. The door measures 6.35 meters long and 3.33 meters wide.

The Sacred Cloth’s Craftsmanship

This year’s Kiswah weighs 1,415 kilograms. It measures 14 meters high. Artisans stitched 54 gilded panels and 47 silk pieces on the cloth. The embroidery includes 68 Quranic verses and the names of Allah, such as “Ya Allah” and “La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah.”

The Kiswah uses 825 kilograms of raw silk. It also contains 120 kilograms of gold thread and 60 kilograms of silver thread, plated with 24-karat gold. Seventeen lanterns with prayers adorn the fabric.

Manufacturing Process

Skilled Saudi artisans spent nearly 11 months making the Kiswah. The King Abdulaziz Complex in Makkah’s Om Al-Joud district produced it. The process includes seven precise steps: desalination, cleansing, weaving, printing, embroidery, joining, and quality inspection.

Rich Materials and Symbolism

The Kiswah uses seven types of premium fabric. These include plain and patterned black silk, red and green silks, and beige and white cotton linings. Some green silk fabric also decorates the Kaaba’s interior and the Prophet’s Chamber in Madinah.

Official Handover

Earlier this month, the Deputy Governor of Makkah handed over the new one to the Kaaba’s caretakers. The replacement ceremony symbolizes renewal and respect for one of Islam’s holiest sites.
