Karnataka bike taxi ban:
Starting June 16, 2025, bike taxi services like Uber Moto and Rapido will no longer be allowed to operate in Karnataka. This decision comes after the Karnataka High Court rejected a plea to stop the state government’s ban on bike taxis. The Transport Department will now strictly enforce the ban, as per current regulations.
The state government had earlier issued notices to companies like Rapido, stating that using private two-wheelers for commercial passenger transport violates existing motor vehicle laws. Only vehicles registered as commercial and holding proper permits are allowed to transport passengers for money.
Rapido had approached the High Court hoping for relief and a stay on the ban. However, the court refused to interfere, making it clear that these services are not legally allowed under the current rules. This verdict deals a big blow to bike taxi operators, who had become popular in cities like Bengaluru for providing fast and affordable travel options in traffic-congested areas.
Now that the court has supported the government’s stand, all app-based bike taxi operations must be shut down from June 16. Companies that do not comply may face legal action.
The ban is expected to affect thousands of daily commuters who depend on these services for short-distance travel, especially in crowded urban areas with limited public transport options. It also affects drivers who depend on these platforms for their livelihood.
The state government has made it clear: only properly licensed vehicles can operate in public transport, and all rules must be followed. This announcement has sparked a debate on urban mobility and highlighted the urgent need to regulate emerging transport services more effectively.
