Katy Perry’s 10-minute space journey: price of spaceflight

Pop sensation Katy Perry’s 10-minute space journey last week took a short but record-breaking journey to the boundary of space on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket. With a crew of all women who comprised Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. CBS host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, scientist Amanda Nguyen and filmmaker Karin Flynn, it was an all-female spaceflight for the first time in 60 years. The crew flew at an altitude of over 60 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth. Crossing the Kármán line — the boundary of space internationally recognized.

The flight, which took around 11 minutes, gave travelers a brief experience of weightlessness. And stunning views of the Earth before returning safely to West Texas. The mission was conducted under Blue Origin’s civilian space program, which has so far taken 58 people to space since its initiation in 2021.

Katy Perry’s 10-minute space journey:

Blue Origin has space travel experience available to anybody who is prepared to fulfill its requirements. Anybody interested must submit a reservation form on Blue Origin’s webpage, giving standard information and a short self-summary. Candidates are required to be at least 18 years old to be qualified.

Cost of space travel

The exact cost of Blue Origin’s space travel is still unknown, but a $150,000 refundable deposit is required to begin the booking process. On its first crewed flight in 2021, Blue Origin auctioned off a seat for $28 million. Competitors such as Virgin Galactic have priced their sub-orbital flights between $200,000 and $450,000. This ended up making space tourism a luxury for the ultra-wealthy.

Do all passengers pay?

Not everyone pays out of pocket for space travel. Stars like William Shatner and Michael Strahan have reportedly flown as “guests” of Blue Origin. Industry insiders say that considerations such as social capital and fit with company goals usually decide who receives a free ride.

Katy Perry’s space mission is indicative of an increasing attraction to space travel, even if its prohibitive cost guarantees exclusivity for the time being. With technology improvements, the flight of fancy concerning space travel is one day closer to becoming achievable for many individuals.
