Luisa Yu, a 79-year-old woman from the Philippines, has always dreamed of traveling around the world.
She came to the U.S. as an exchange student at the age of 23 and started traveling across the United States. Later, she began a career in the medical technology field but eventually changed it. She became a travel agent so she could take more time off to travel.
Over five decades, she visited countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Despite facing challenges, including safety concerns, Yu remained determined to experience diverse cultures firsthand.
She achieved her goal in November 2023. She even became one of two Filipinos recognized by the international community Nomad Mania as a “UN Master” for visiting all 193 UN member states.
When she traveled to the United States as an exchange student to study medical technologies in her early 20s, it was the first step toward her ambition becoming a reality. When she was unable to go outside of the United States due to visa limitations, she took Greyhound buses to see the nation. While working at a hospital in Miami, she accrued vacation time, which she saved for vacations within the United States. Kentucky and Oklahoma are the only two U.S. states she has not yet visited.
“The ’round-the-world feat wasn’t easy,” Yu comments. In order to travel abroad, she had to wait fifteen years for her green card. According to her, there were times when she worked up to three jobs at once in order to accumulate enough cash for vacations.
In November, Serbia was the last location on her world tour. Luisa is still alive and well and she is still traveling.
