Mahalakshmi Free Bus Scheme: Huge Profit for TGSRTC

TGSRTC: TGSRTC’s profits have increased due to the free bus travel on Mahalakshmi scheme. RTC has made huge profits in the last and current financial years. While it made a profit of Rs. 104.11 crore in 2023-24, it has made a profit of Rs. 529.20 crore by January 2024-25. The government is estimating a profit of Rs. 1,008.79 crore in 2025-26.

It is known that the Telangana government has launched the Mahalakshmi Free Bus Scheme for women. As per the promise made in the assembly elections, the government launched this scheme as soon as it came to power. From December 9, 2023, the state government is providing free travel to women, girls and transgenders in ordinary, express, city buses and metro express buses. They can travel free from anywhere across the state by showing their Aadhaar card and taking a zero ticket. The government is paying the entire fare to the TGSRTC.

Huge Profit for TGSRTC

However, after the implementation of this scheme, the number of passengers in RTC has increased drastically. While the average daily passenger count was 45.49 lakh earlier, it has increased to 59.10 lakh after the implementation of this scheme, RTC officials said. An additional 13.61 lakh people are travelling. Previously, 12 lakh people travelled daily in Hyderabad city, but after the implementation of the scheme, that number has doubled. While RTC was in loss earlier, RTC has been making profits for the last two years after the implementation of the Mahalakshmi free bus scheme.

To this extent, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar made a key announcement in the Assembly. He said that RTC has benefited from the free bus travel on Mahalakshmi and said that RTC has received good income in the past and current financial years with the implementation of the scheme. He said that in 2023-24, a profit of Rs. 104.11 crore was earned, while in 2024-25, a profit of Rs. 529.20 crore was earned by January itself. He said that it is estimated that by the end of this financial year, Rs. 709.29 crore will be earned. The Minister revealed that a total profit of Rs. 1,008.79 crore is expected in 2025-26. He explained in the assembly about the achievements of RTC and its future goals. He expressed hope that RTC will develop further in the coming days.
