Highest UPI Transactions: Maharashtra has emerged as the top state in India for UPI usage, according to the latest report from SBI’s Economic Research Department (ERD). Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu follow closely behind. However, the report also cautions that fintech innovation in India may be facing hurdles due to a high concentration of transactions being routed through just a few third-party application providers (TPAPs).

For the first time, SBI ERD released state-wise data on UPI transactions. In July, Maharashtra led the chart with a 9.8% share of total UPI volumes, followed by Karnataka (5.5%), Uttar Pradesh (5.3%), Telangana (4.1%), and Tamil Nadu (4%). In terms of digital payment value, Maharashtra again topped the list with a 9.2% share, trailed by Karnataka (5.8%), Uttar Pradesh (5.3%), Telangana (5.1%), and Tamil Nadu (4.7%).

The report further highlighted that UPI transactions have shown significant growth in both value and volume. In 2025 alone, the average daily transaction value rose from ₹75,743 crore in January to ₹80,919 crore in July, and ₹90,446 crore in August (so far), underscoring UPI’s growing dominance in India’s digital payments ecosystem.
