Mock drills in 5 states tomorrow: Why it’s happening again

Mock drills in 5 states tomorrow: India will stage a large-scale Civil Defence Mock Drill across five important border states. That include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir. This special project is meant to assess and improve emergency preparedness measures throughout the country, mainly in countries with international borders that are considered vulnerable to cross-border threats.


Simulating Emergencies in Real-Time

The drill will consist of various high-intensity activities such as activation of air raid sirens, blackout simulations, evacuations of the public, and awareness instruction for the community. These activities will consist of accurate simulation of emergencies. They will allow both authorizes and citizens to react in a coordinated manner during a real-life crisis.

Local government agencies, civil defence volunteers, and community members will all get involved in these drills. The goal is to develop coordination, speed of response, and awareness by the public in these situations for situations such as terrorist attacks or natural disasters.


Haryana Taking Action with ‘Operation Shield’

Among the participating states, Haryana is taking a particularly active role. The state will be engaging in a broad mock drill called “Operation Shield”, at 5 PM and across all 22 districts. Authorities have issued public advisories indicating to communities that they can remain calm and only need to comply with directions from the officials. They have advised that individuals shouldn’t spread rumors or misinformation that could cause panic.
Background of Elevated Security

This nationwide exercise stems from elevated security situations that have recently occurred. Most specifically in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. India started Operation Sindoor, a military operation which aims to neutralize threats in the northern borders. The ongoing mock drills refer to the government’s attempts to improve civil defense in likely risk areas.

Building Resiliency and Public Preparedness

The mock drills are designed not only to test systems and protocols but also to build awareness. And cultural preparedness among citizens. Civil defence volunteers will continue to participate alongside local law enforcement and emergency services as part of an overall effort to build resilient communities that are better prepared to deal with emergencies that arise and are not planned.
