Monkey Steals Purse: When Abhishek Agarwal of Aligarh was leaving the temple, a monkey stole his wife’s handbag close to the temple exit and disappeared. A devotee lost a bag holding jewelry valued at ₹20 lakh to a monkey on Thursday, highlighting the threat posed by the monkeys in the alleys leading to the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. The bag was eventually found by police using CCTV footage.
As Aligarh resident Abhishek Agarwal was leaving the temple, a monkey grabbed his wife’s handbag close to the temple exit and disappeared into the tangle of old buildings and tiny streets. During her visit to the temple, the woman removed her jewelry and stored it in the bag.

Police Investigation:
Sandeep Kumar Singh, a circle officer (Sadar), stated that the panic was genuine because the bag contained jewelry valued at ₹20 lakh. “The monkey was not immediately visible.” Despite asking locals for assistance, Agarwal was unable to locate the monkey. Prashant Kapil, the outpost in-charge of Banke Bihari, moved quickly to begin a search. The cops found the bag in a thicket and gave it back to its owner with the use of fieldwork and CCTV footage.
“My valuables were returned to me by the grace of Lord Banke Bihari, and I am grateful to the Vrindavan police for their assistance,” Agarwal said.
Special measures are implemented during VVIP visits: slingshots are used by security guards, “langoor” monkeys are used as deterrents, and pathways are covered with cloth to keep monkeys from looking at prominent visitors.
