Monsoon Hits Kerala: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed several southern and western states, including Karnataka and Kerala, under a severe rainfall alert as they welcome the southwest monsoon. Additionally, IMD has issued a red alert for Goa, warning of significant rainfall expected to continue through Sunday. Over the past 24 hours, the coastal state has already experienced heavy downpours.
Furthermore, the weather forecast predicts three consecutive days of intense rain, from May 25 to 27. Starting Saturday, skies are expected to turn overcast, with showers and thunderstorms likely to persist through Monday.
Heavy Rains in Kerala:
The southwest monsoon officially arrived in Kerala today, beginning eight days earlier than the usual onset date of June 1. According to the India Meteorological Department, this marks the earliest monsoon onset in Kerala since 2009, when it began on May 23. Going further back, historical data since 1975 shows that the earliest recorded arrival of the southwest monsoon occurred on May 19, 1990, an early onset by 13 days.

This year’s early monsoon arrival marks the start of the rainy season in Kerala, providing much-needed respite and the beginning of the monsoon’s wider spread over the Indian subcontinent. In the upcoming weeks, meteorologists will be keeping a careful eye on its path as it moves to different regions of the nation. The districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Idukki, and Malappuram are under a red alert in Kerala, according to the IMD.
Cities with Red Alert:
Karnataka: A low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to forecast significant rainfall across Karnataka, particularly in the coastal regions. As a result, IMD expects Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts to receive heavy to very heavy rain along with widespread moderate showers on Saturday. Meanwhile, parts of Dakshina Kannada are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.

Furthermore, the department forecasts that extremely heavy rain will continue in Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada on May 25. Gusty winds are expected to persist throughout the forecast period, prompting several districts to issue weather alerts. As the storm system continues to develop and move inland, IMD has urged residents to exercise caution. Meanwhile, Bengaluru is likely to experience sporadic rainfall over the next five days.
Goa: The weather service issued a red alert and predicted heavy to extremely heavy showers through Sunday. In response, authorities warned fishermen to stay ashore, as they expect squally weather with wind gusts reaching up to 60 kmph along and off the Konkan and Goa coasts.
