Mumbai Train Accident: Five passengers lost their lives due to overcrowding in a train in the country’s financial capital Mumbai on Monday morning. The Pushpak train, which was going from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Thane, was extremely crowded. Due to this, several passengers slipped while traveling on the footboard. Five of them died and 12 others were injured. The passengers were traveling on the footboard as there was no space to even step inside the train compartment. According to the officials, passengers accidentally slipped in a local train going from Diva to Thane . Five of them were seriously injured and died on the spot.
Railway officials, who received information about the accident, reached the spot and took up rescue operations. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Senior officials said that an investigation has been launched into the incident. The full details of the accident are yet to be known. Frequent train accidents are a cause for serious concern.
In the wake of this incident, the Railways has taken a key decision to improve the safety of Mumbai local train travel. It has been decided to provide automatic door closure facility to Mumbai suburban trains . All coaches currently under production will now come with automatic door closure facility. All coaches already in service will be redesigned and door closing facility will also be provided in them. Officials said that these measures are indispensable steps being taken to enhance the safety of lakhs of passengers who travel daily in Mumbai.
This decision has been taken in the wake of hundreds of accidents due to open doors. Experts believe that the technology of automatically closing doors during train travel will reduce the risk of passengers falling.
AC local trains in Mumbai already have automatic door closing facility. Now the same technology will be extended to regular coaches as well. It is expected that these measures will significantly improve the safety of train travel.
