5.1 Magnitude Earthquake: Two days after fatal tremors caused major havoc in Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, Myanmar was struck by an earthquake on Sunday with a Richter Scale of about 5.
The tremors’ magnitude was recorded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) at 5.1 magnitude. The earthquake’s magnitude, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), was 4.6. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the magnitude was 5.2 at the same time.
Between 12 and 1 pm on Sunday, the earthquake halted construction in Mandalay, Myanmar. In an X post, NCS wrote, “EQ of M: 4.6, On: 30/03/2025 12:38:02 IST, Lat: 22.14 N, Long: 95.88 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar.” The USGS reported that the tremors persisted until approximately 12:38 p.m.
More than 1600 people had died as a result of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28. The USGS’s preliminary modeling on Friday suggested that the death toll from the earthquake that rocked central Myanmar would surpass 10,000. According to Myanmar’s military junta, 68 individuals are still unaccounted for in the Mandalay region, which was the epicenter of the earthquake.
From the high-rises of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, to the rural villages caught during Myanmar’s civil conflict, tremors were felt everywhere. CNN said that the Yunnan area of China was also experiencing tremors.
After the dangerous earthquake, Myanmar and Thailand declared a state of emergency in their countries. Emergency response teams started to arrive in Myanmar’s worst-affected areas on Sunday. Damaged roads, fallen bridges, erratic communication systems, and the additional difficulties of operating in a nation currently experiencing civil war are some of the major obstacles to their operations.
