Nagpur Violence: Here’s All You Have to Know About the Incident

Tensions flared in Nagpur’s Mahal area after protests demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb turned violent. The situation worsened after rumors spread that a holy book was burnt during the demonstrations. A curfew was imposed following this and police took strict measures to control the unrest.

What Triggered the Violence?

The violence began when a right wing group staged a protest demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. A rumor spread that a holy book had been burned leading to clashes between different groups. Protesters hurled stones at the police injuring several officers.

Police Response and Curfew

The police imposed a curfew to prevent further escalation in key areas, including Ganeshpeth, Kotwali and Lakadganj. Only essential services were allowed and authorities urged people to maintain peace. Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal led a route march in the affected areas to reassure residents.

Legal Action Taken

An FIR was registered against members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Authorities are also investigating possible instigators behind the violence. DCP Niketan Kadam confirmed that CCTV footage is being examined to identify those responsible.

Political leaders reacted strongly to the violence. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb while Congress leaders accused the government of failing to maintain law and order. AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel compared the incident to historical conflicts criticizing the state administration.

Current Situation

Officials have assured that the situation in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is now peaceful. However police forces remain on high alert, and residents have been urged not to spread misinformation. Authorities are closely monitoring social media for any attempts to incite further violence.
