The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has made some New Green Card Rules in 2025 that put Green Card holders, or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs), the focus of the changes. Some changes impact forms submissions, non-citizen registration requirements, and continuous efforts to revoke residence status. Below are the things you must understand.
When filing for a replacement Green Card, USCIS has also required LPRs to file the most recent version of Form I-90 in its entirety. LPRs filing forms with pages out of multiple versions can be denied or slow down processing. The policy is aimed at streamlining the application process and ultimately improve efficiency of document processing.
Registration for Non-Citizens Required
Beginning on April 11, 2025, potential applicants who were non-citizens and are now 14 years of age and older who were never fingerprinted or registered at the time of the visa process and plan to remain in the United States. for over 30 days, are required to register with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Parents or guardians are required to do it for children under the age of 14 if they also meet the same requirements. Failure to do so results in legal ramifications such as fines or other penalties.
Legal Controversy: Revocation of Green Card
Recent judicial developments have called into question the potential for Green Cards to be revoked at any time. The U.S. Department of Justice has posited that the Attorney General can re-examine and revoke permanent residency, no matter the duration that a person has had their Green Card. While this policy remains in legal dispute, it has implications on whether permanent residency in the U.S. is secure in the long term.
In order to remain protected and in conformity:
Update Documents: Keep your Green Card and supporting documents current and properly filed.
Comply with New Regulations: Enroll with DHS if you come under the new regulations.
Consult a Lawyer: Get legal advice if you’re not certain about your status or when you’re affected by these changes.
With immigration policies still changing, being up-to-date and proactive is essential for everyone with a Green Card in the U.S.
