New variant of Corona identified in India

New variant of Corona: The Covid-19 pandemic is once again frightening. Countries like Singapore and Hong Kong are reporting a large number of cases and deaths. Meanwhile, corona cases are increasing again in several states of India. In this sequence, a new variant of corona has emerged in the country. A Covid-19 variant called NB.1.8.1 has been identified. Along with this, cases of the LF.7 variant are also emerging. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been monitoring these two variants. JN.1 variant cases are more common in the country. However, the health department has become alert as Covid cases are increasing in some areas.

Variants under surveillance

INSACOG  has announced that a new variant of the coronavirus, NB.1.8.1, has been identified in India. It has released data related to this. Along with this, four cases of the LF.7 variant have also been reported. The WHO has classified these two variants as ‘ variants under surveillance’. However, they have not been declared as variants of concern. However, these variants are causing an increase in Covid cases in some parts of Asia like China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The NB.1.8.1 variant first emerged in Tamil Nadu last month. LF.7 cases were reported in Gujarat this month. The JN.1 variant of the coronavirus is currently the most prevalent in India. This variant accounts for 53 percent of the samples tested from coronavirus patients, followed by BA.2 (26 percent) and other subtypes related to Omicron (20 percent).

New variant of Corona: A threat to people?

The WHO has initially assessed that the threat to people from NB.1.8.1 is low. However, some changes in the spike protein of this virus are causing it to spread rapidly. In addition, it also causes the immune system to spread. A435S, V445H, and T4781 are important among these changes.

As of May 19, there were 257 Covid cases in the country. Cases are increasing in some areas. In the last 24 hours, 23 cases were reported in Delhi, four in Andhra Pradesh, and one in Telangana. A 9-month-old child in Bengaluru also tested positive for the coronavirus. Cases have been increasing in the last 20 days. 273 cases were reported in Kerala in May.

The Director General of Health Services has convened a meeting to review the Covid-19 situation in the country. Experts from ICMR and National Centre for Disease Control participated in this meeting.
