North Sentinel Island: One YouTuber’s stunt Put an Isolated Tribe at Risk

North Sentinel Island: An American YouTuber was arrested for illegally entering a prohibited area in India and trying to interact with a reclusive tribe that inhabits a remote island in the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Government says his actions posed a serious threat to the safety and well-being of the tribe, whose contact with outsiders is prohibited by law to protect the indigenous way of life.


On March 31st, India arrested Mkylo Polyakov, a 24-year-old US tourist and social media influencer, for trespassing into the remote North Sentinel Island. He was armed with a camera, a coconut, and a can of Diet Coke. Polyakov tried to make contact with the isolated and reclusive Sentinelise tribe. It was also reported that he blew a whistle near the shore of the island in a bit to attract the attention of the tribe. As he didn’t find anyone, he then left the coconut and Diet Coke on the shore and collected some sand samples and recorded footage using gopro camera.

HS Dhaliwal the police chief of Andaman and Nicobar Islands said thar polykov had landed in port blair on 26th March. He was spotted taking of from a beach in South Andaman on 29th March just after midnight. According to the police, they have filed a normal complaint against Polykov under the Foreigners Act 1946 for entering a protected tribal reserve or restricted area without permission.

The Tribal lands are protected under the Andaman and Nicobar Islands regulations of 1956, which prohibit unauthorized entry to the locations. In this case, the police chief said, “Basic investigation has already been completed, all the footage will also be forensically examined, and whatever necessary actions will be taken and bring this case to a conclusion soon.” The local court has sent polykov to a 14 day judicial custody and he was said to appear again in the court on April 17th. According to the charges applied on him, there is a possibility of having a sentence of upto 5 years in prison and a fine.
