Pahalgam Attack Survival Stories:
A Couple’s Quick Escape on Horseback
Komal Soni and her husband Mihir, newly married and visiting Pahalgam for their honeymoon, had a terrifying experience. They were enjoying Maggi and taking selfies when they suddenly heard gunshots. Komal said, “We heard a shot, then another, and people started falling.”
Realizing the danger, they quickly fled the area on horseback. Locals helped them stay calm as they prayed for safety. They later caught the first available flight back to Jaipur. Though safe, they felt a mix of sadness and gratitude for surviving such a horrifying event.
Salty Food Delays Saved a Kerala Family
For a family from Kerala, something as simple as salty fried rice may have saved their lives. Alby George and his wife Lavanya had planned to visit Baisaran Meadow that afternoon. However, when their lunch was too salty, they ordered a new meal, causing about an hour’s delay.
While still near the restaurant, they noticed horses running and people screaming. Their instincts told them to turn back to their resort instead of continuing. Later, they learned that a terror attack had occurred exactly where they had planned to be. They believe their delayed meal was a blessing in disguise.
Cancelled Ride Protected a Nagpur Family
Another lucky escape involved a family from Nagpur. Swati Kolkar, a nursing officer, shared that a canceled ride saved them. They had originally planned to visit Baisaran on Tuesday, but a last-minute cancellation of their gondola ride in Gulmarg made them change their plans and visit Baisaran a day earlier.
While returning from a different spot, Sinthan Top, they noticed heavy security checks and sensed something was wrong. Later, they realized they narrowly escaped the violence that broke out where they had intended to be.
Reciting Kalima Saved a Professor
Debasish Bhattacharya, a professor from Assam University, had an even more intense encounter. When a terrorist pointed a gun at him, he survived by reciting the Islamic kalima. Terrified, he chanted it loudly as he had learned Islamic texts during his student days.
His quick thinking may have saved not only himself but also his wife, a well-known dancer, and their son, a doctor. They managed to hide in bushes until locals helped them escape. His sister later said his knowledge of Islamic prayers probably saved his life.
The recent attack in Pahalgam was a reminder of how unpredictable life can be. For these tourists, small decisions—a delayed lunch, a canceled ride, or past knowledge—became miracles that saved them. Their stories show how being alert and trusting instincts can sometimes make the difference between life and death.
