Pakistan Reacts To India’s Reaction: The aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack has created a chain of retaliatory actions between Pakistan and India. India has adopted strong measures, such as suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, prohibiting Fawad Khan’s upcoming movie, and shutting down Pakistani digital platforms accused of circulating misinformation. Pakistan has also taken all Indian songs off its radio stations’ airwaves, another cultural gap between the two countries.
Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty
Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty was the most impactful move by India. The Indus Waters Treaty, which was signed in 1960, is one of the oldest water-sharing agreements between the two nations. For years, it has served as a model of how the two nations can work with one another even in the face of ongoing political tensions. That changed with the Pahalgam attack, however, as India suspended the water flowing into Pakistan in a stunning policy change.
India has banned actor Fawad Khan’s new film, limiting its release within the country. The action follows past bans on Pakistani material in Indian cinema due to political disagreements.
Blocking Pakistani YouTube Channels and Celebrity IG Accounts
In response to misinformation, India banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, which are claimed to have been spreading misinformation. Instagram accounts of Pakistani celebrities such as Hania Aamir and Mahira Khan have also been suspended, reducing the digital space between the two countries further.
Ban on Indian Songs from Radio Stations
Pakistan retaliated by pulling all Indian music off the airwaves on its radio frequencies. The Pakistan Broadcasters Association has confirmed that old favorites of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, as well as fresh hits by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, have been pulled from the airwaves. The action is in line with previous cultural boycotts between India and Pakistan during times of heightened tensions.

The Pahalgam blockade has increased diplomatic tension, with retaliatory action in water-sharing, entertainment, and access to digital services. While such action is a pointer to rising hostility, it also nudges countries to balance the long-term cost to bilateral relations. With tensions rising, the solution centres on achieving outcomes that prioritize security while honoring cultural and humanitarian interests.
