Pakistan’s History Rewritten: ‘Pahalgam Terrorists Motives Revealed

Pakistan’s History Rewritten: On April 22, 2025, a ruthless terrorist attack was carried out at the tourist spot of Pahalgam, Baisaran Maidan in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack resulted in 26 deaths, the majority of whom were tourists, and a few others injured. The Resistance Front (TRF), a subsidiary of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), took responsibility for the massacre. The attack was the most deadly in the Kashmir Valley since the Pulwama attack of 2019, which was greeted with outrage and condemnation in all of India.

Pakistan’s inflammatory comments

While Pakistan officially denounced the attack, its Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar caused controversy when he referred to the suspects as “freedom fighters”. Addressing journalists in Islamabad, Dar stated, “Those who attacked in Pahalgam district of Jammu and Kashmir could have been freedom fighters.” His comments attracted severe criticism as they seemed to justify the actions of the terrorists who had caused the tragedy.

India’s diplomatic retaliation

In retaliation to the attack, India issued a sequence of stringent actions against Pakistan. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, went ahead and suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in effect, suspending water-sharing pacts between the two nations. India has also cancelled all visas granted to Pakistani citizens and shut down the Integrated Check Post at Attari, further decreasing bilateral engagement.

Pakistan’s response

The Pakistani authorities have responded with defiance to Indian counter-measures. Dar said stopping the Indus Waters Treaty would be deemed an “act of war” since water meant everything to the 240 million Pakistanis. The National Security Committee (NSC), presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, re-emphasized that any such attempt to redirect water meant for Pakistan would invite serious resistance.

Tensions increase

Rhetoric by Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has further escalated tensions as he blamed India for plotting attacks throughout Pakistan and threatened a “tit-for-tat” response. When the two nations are already in conflict following the Pahalgam attack, the incident highlights the pressing need for solutions through diplomacy to avoid further escalation and promote regional stability.
