Powerful earthquake hits Myanmar, Skyscapper Collapsed

At 12:50 p.m. (local time) on Friday, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake and a 6.8-magnitude aftershock hit central Myanmar. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre was 10 km deep and 16 km northwest of the city of Sagaing. Casualties have been reported thus far.

There is no tsunami warning in effect. Beijing’s earthquake agency reported that the tremors were felt as far away as China’s Yunnan province and northern Thailand, where some rail and metro services were suspended in the country’s capital, Bangkok. The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the Yunnan earthquake had a strong magnitude of 7.9, and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is convening an “urgent meeting” to assess the situation.

Take a look at the Visuals:

Videos of buildings trembling in Bangkok and other places, with people fleeing into the streets in fear, were making the rounds on X. “I heard it… I was sleeping in the house and then I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas out of the building,” Duangjai, who lives in the well-known tourist destination of Chiang Mai, told AFP.

In Another video shows the water in a tiny pool at a private home splattering wildly, producing what appeared to be miniature tsunamis.

Myanmar experiences earthquakes frequently; from 1930 to 1956, six powerful earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher occurred close to the Sagaing Fault, which runs through the nation from north to south.

In 2016, spires and decaying temple walls at the popular tourist attraction were toppled by a strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Bagan, the historic capital in central Myanmar, killing three people. The medical system of the poor country is under stress, particularly in its rural provinces.
