Pranay-Amrutha Case: Death Sentence and Life Imprisonment

Pranay-Amrutha Case: Death Sentence and Life Imprisonment

Remember Pranay and Amrutha? The shocking honor killing case in Miryalaguda that shook Telangana in 2018? Pranay was murdered in broad daylight by Subhash Sharma and six others hired by Amrutha’s father, Maruthi Rao. Today, the Nalgonda SC/ST Second Additional Sessions Court sentenced Subhash Sharma to death and six others to life imprisonment. Maruthi Rao later committed suicide in 2020.

Amrutha and Pranay, residents of Miryalaguda fell in love since school days and married in 2018. Amrutha was five months pregnant when Maruti Rao orchestrated Pranay’s murder. Honor killing is the reason behind this brutal murder.

On Monday, a local court in the Nalgonda district found seven defendants guilty in the 2018 shocking honor killing of Pranay Kumar. One of them, Subhash Sharma, was given the death penalty.

Nalgonda Superintendent of police Sharat Chandra Pawar said to the media, “The court, in its decision, convicted 7 accused for killing Pranay by awarding death sentence to Subhash Sharma and life imprisonment to six other accused, including Asgar Ali.”

Asgar Ali was acquitted after first being charged with the murder of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya. After Pranay and his wife, Amrutha Varshni, left the hospital in September 2018. The two people outside the hospital trapped Pranay to death. Against the desires of her family, Pranay, a member of the scheduled caste, married Amrutha.

According to police, her father, Maruthi Rao, hired attackers by contacting Asgar Ali, who dispatched a couple of hitmen. They killed Pranay and carried out the plot. In their plot, even Maruthi Rao’s brother Shravan was part of this plan, he also got life imprisonment. He is A6, according to police reports.

Eight people were named as suspects by the investigators, however, Maruthi Rao committed suicide. The remaining seven defendants were put on trial, and the court found them guilty. Pawar also said, “Though Maruthi Rao died by suicide, we still managed to get conviction because of the strong technical evidence, including CCTV footage, which were gathered.”

Marriage is an individual choice. In a democratic country like India, every individual has the right to live according to their own freedom. The Constitution of India guarantees the right to practice freedom in marriage, food, dress, faith, and much more. Interestingly, while a section of people appreciated the Court verdict, some blamed Amrutha for marrying Pranay against her parents’ wish. However, murder is a punishable offence, and the court did the same today.
