Public Holiday: India will observe Muharram on either July 6 or July 7, depending on the moon sighting. Authorities have tentatively set July 6 as the likely date. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and holds deep significance for Shia Muslims in particular.

Stock Markets Closed:
On Muharram, India’s major stock exchanges, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), will shut down. This closure will impact all trading segments, currencies, interest rate futures, derivatives, equities, and the Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) platform.
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also suspend its morning session. However, it is expected to resume trading in the evening from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM.
Muharram Significance:
Muslims consider Muharram as one of the four holy months in Islam. They honor the tenth day, Ashura, in remembrance of Imam Hussein ibn Ali—the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who died in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. On this day, communities hold somber processions, offer prayers, and gather for religious assemblies to observe his sacrifice.
As India prepares for this solemn occasion, public life is expected to pause, allowing space for reflection and spiritual observance.
