Russian President Vladimir Putin credited US President Donald Trump for the improving ties between Moscow and Washington. While addressing a press conference in Minsk, Putin said Trump played a key role in stabilising diplomatic relations. He described the recent progress as “levelling out” tensions between the two nations.
Putin called Trump a “very courageous person” and revealed that the former US President had survived two assassination attempts. He expressed his “great respect” for Trump and shared his openness to a possible meeting. However, he stressed that any such summit would need careful preparation on both sides.
Putin also confirmed that Russia is ready for renewed peace talks over the Ukraine conflict. He suggested Istanbul as the location for the next round of direct negotiations. During his visit to Belarus, Putin stated that ceasefire terms could soon appear on the agenda, signaling a possible shift in strategy.
He told reporters that while diplomatic progress remains incomplete, the first steps have been taken. “We are moving forward,” Putin declared, hinting at cautious optimism for future US-Russia dialogue.
Donald Trump welcomed Putin’s remarks. “Putin made some very nice statements today,” he said. Trump emphasized that global leaders like Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un also “respect our country.” He described the growing acknowledgment as evidence of the United States reclaiming strength and credibility.
Trump also commented on Putin’s position regarding NATO and Western alliances. He noted Putin’s frustration over what he called repeated betrayals by the West, especially regarding NATO’s expansion and Ukraine.

Putin’s message reflects a larger strategic shift. He said Russia would no longer play “one-sided” games with the West. At the Eurasian Economic Union summit, he accused NATO of using Russian “aggression” as an excuse to raise military spending across Europe.
For Trump, the mutual respect signals a “monumental win” a fresh path to diplomacy and, possibly, a rebalanced global order.
