R Madhavan on Indian history textbooks: Actor R Madhavan openly criticized how schools teach Indian history. In an exclusive interview, he expressed concern that textbooks ignore major parts of India’s rich heritage, especially Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.

Madhavan recalled his school days, saying, “We had eight chapters on the Mughals with a few on British rule and only one on the powerful southern kingdoms like the Cholas and Pallavas.” He felt that this gave students a very limited view of India’s true historical depth.

He also highlighted how ancient Indian civilizations like the Cholas were great sea travelers and traders. “They had spice routes reaching as far as Rome and built temples as far away as Angkor Wat. But all this gets just one chapter,” he said. He stressed that Indian religions and languages such as Tamil had a global influence yet they don’t get enough importance in school curriculums.

Madhavan’s comments came as a response to questions around the historical accuracy of the film Kesari Chapter 2 in which he plays a major role. Critics claimed the movie took creative liberties with history but Madhavan defended the film by saying, “If we are correcting the historical narrative then don’t blame us. Blame us only if we twist the truth.”

He also criticized the British for misrepresenting Indian history during colonial times. “They painted freedom fighters as criminals and left a biased version of our past,” he said. Madhavan pointed out that many Indians still believe the false narratives created by the British.

He expressed disappointment that today’s students might miss learning about the scientific and cultural achievements of ancient India. Madhavan urged schools to teach a more balanced and truthful version of history.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about NCERT’s decision to remove references to the Mughal Empire and Delhi Sultanate from Class 7 history books replacing them with content on festivals and government schemes.
