Rajasthan Couple: 90-Year-Old Couples Ties Knot After 70 Years

Rajasthan Couple: After living together for 70 years, a nonagenarian couple from Rajasthan gained widespread attention on social media when they got married. Rama Bhai Kharari (95) and Jeewali Devi (90), residents of Galandar—a tribal community in Dungarpur district—raised eight children and have several grandchildren, despite never having formally married. After seven decades of companionship, the couple finally decided to tie the knot, and their children wholeheartedly supported their decision.

70 Years of Live-In:

The couple expressed their desire to get married, and the entire family supported their decision. After consulting the village elders, the family organized the haldi ceremony on June 1. “The whole village came together to celebrate the wedding ceremony on June 4,” the couple’s son, Kanti Lal Kharari, told the media.

“They are happy, and we are also happy,” Mr. Kharari added. The couple’s children enthusiastically participated in the traditional pre-wedding parade, known as bandoli, which included DJ music and lively dancing with the villagers. After completing the customary saat phere, seven sacred circles around the fire, the newlyweds enjoyed a grand communal feast held in their honor.

Grand Celebrations:

“Everyone in the community was at Bandoli. We finished the ritual with music and celebrations,” Mr. Lal stated. Notably, the couple had been together under the Nata custom, which is distinctive to Rajasthan’s tribal areas. It is customary for any tribal man or woman to live with another individual of their choosing without getting married.

The child of such a connection is entitled to all of the man’s property. However, there are certain limitations because of the non-married status, particularly at social gatherings. Women are prohibited from attending events such as their children’s weddings, the haldi ceremony, and the groom’s welcome, among others.
